I was going to push this newsletter off until tomorrow because of my migraine but I pushed through so please clap. It’s so hard being accountable to no one but someone has to do it.
To start things off, I watched all of the Twilight movies this weekend. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Stephenie Meyer’s Mormonism ruined a perfectly good series. A vampire who was alive in 1969 doesn’t have premarital sex for 100 years? Rosalie bullied Bella but was always right so why is everyone mad? Someone please write a good version of Twilight.
I also wanted to talk about An Education (2009), my absolute favorite movie. This movie captures the allure adulthood has on young women without patronizing Jenny. This is a credit to Carey Mulligan as an actress, who shows a bright young woman fully immersed in the world of French New Wave, “smoking and wearing black,” records, concerts, existentialist literature, desperate to get out of the grasp of her scared, boring parents. Meeting David (Peter Sarsgaard) is like opening a door. Finally, someone who not only understands the value of her interests, but a whole ass MAN with MONEY who TAKES HER PLACES. After a life of suffering, it is no wonder the teenage girl seeks pleasure. Interest from men is exciting and new. You feel invincible because how could it ever end? Watching this movie as an adult, I know the other shoe has to drop. Jenny doesn’t because teenagers never do… so she keeps having fun with Rosamund Pike!!!
After a whirlwind courtship and a trip to Paris where she has really bad sex, David is revealed to be a liar. The mirage is a pretty shitty desert after all. Perhaps the most painful moment in every woman’s life is when she realizes what the cost of pleasure is and realize poor Jenny does. To me, this movie is a perfect addition to the “Your suffering is not special, it is always universal! Let’s hash it out in a period piece with your dream wardrobe for your emotional comfort girlie!” genre. See also: Clueless, Pride and Prejudice, Lady J. I think this essay was supposed to be profound but I got lost on Rosamund Pike’s clothing, so here are more pics of that.
Finally, I don’t want to be political but any movie where Dominic Cooper hangs out with a blonde woman slaps. Case closed.
Some other things from this week:
Read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. Nothing like a romance novel to get out of a reading slump. It didn’t change my life but it did remind me my soulmate is 6’5 and not 5’8 as a recent setback led me to believe!
The secret is out on Lisa Says Gah… when are we getting new trends? I feel like we’re all these cute shiny little Glossier girlies (myself included) but what else is happening where is the CULTURE!
Will probably purchase some of these masks because there’s no way in hell this plague is subsiding…
Bookmarked this veggie fritter and this broccoli slaw recipe. I am so tired of eating I want to live on Soylent and popcorn.
The Abolition of Work we really need to rethink the modern ideal of work.
I have a *** ********* this week so please send me good vibes! Also if you’re the demon who has been hexing me, knock it the f**k off. thanks <3 have a great week besties!
